My husband brought this up as we were having lunch and it is an interesting question.........we keep hearing how the big oil companies are gouging the American
people but is there someplace where the price of gasoline is broken down? We live in TX and gas has just gone up to $3.55/gal. How much of that price goes to
the oil company, how much to the gas station owner, how much to state and federal taxes, etc.? Anyone know of a site that does that?

From the California Energy Commission.... May and June 2008 (snicker at their typo.... glad to see I'm not the only one who makes 'em)
Gasoline Price Breakdown - This page details the estimated gross margins for both refiners and distributors. The term "margin" includes both costs and profits. The margin data is based on the statewide average retail and wholesale price of gasoline for a single day of the week. It is not a seven-day average. The margin provided here is an indicator for the California market as a whole and not for any particular refiner or retailer of gasoline.

you don't want to live in wyoming, I have a friend there, and she has to drive 75 miles one way to get to town, what you'd save in gas, you'd burn
up in miles!

Actually Wyoming is a pretty nice place to live. They have an enlightened attitude towards firearms, the hunting and fishing is very good, they pay their
teachers pretty well, there is no state income tax, and the gas is as low as any place in the country! Lots of nice communities in Wyoming!

Crude oil just hit $126 a barrel today. That breaks down to $3 a gallon for just the oil before refinineing. I'm not sure how the corperate structure
works, but if the speculators and the devalued dollar have driven the crude price so high, how does anyone but the market players make any money making
gasoline?
