John, I have not been to Gary in about 30 years or so. In fact, it was so long ago that my memory is all screwed up! I looked on a map - I was remembering from BEFORE I moved to Columbus, Ohio, and I used to fly into Chicago and drive to Berrien Springs, Michigan from Chicago that I passed by Gary. Once I moved to Columbus, it was Elkhart and other towns that I passed through coming from the other direction (I am getting so old that I can't remember right!).

I passed through on I-94. I usually flew in about once a month or so for years.

Has Gary gotten that terrible? Sorry to hear that. I had no idea.

Sammie, I think that you missed my point. I didn't say that his old man couldn't afford to pay his own way. I am saying the the mayor of Gary was trying to make sure that there were enough well known Jacksons in Gary such that it would get Gary enough publicity that he could parlay up to a burial, museum, tourist dollars, etc. It was a gamble that he took for the city.
