YANKEES' STADIUM PITCH WINS
By BILL SANDERSON
February 23, 2006 -- Plans to build a new Yankee Stadium are rounding the bases toward home.
The city Planning Commission approved the $1.1 billion project yesterday by a 12-0 vote, with one abstention.
The Yankees hope to break ground this year on the stadium
, which will go up across 161st Street from the House That Ruth Built.
Commission chairwoman Amanda Burden said neighbors' complaints about the project forced the city to improve design proposals for the area's parks.
"This effort has resulted in
a better plan
," Burden said.
But
stadium opponents said they'd keep up their demand for either renovation of the existing stadium or building the new stadium further south, near the Bronx Terminal Market project.
Greg Bell Sr., co-chairman of the anti-stadium group Bronx Voices for Equal Inclusion, said members of his group have discussed the issue with City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
