MET-NORTH MAY GO TO BAT FOR YANKEE STOP
By BILL SANDERSON
March 6, 2006 -- A new Metro-North station for Yankee Stadium - one of New York's longest-discussed construction projects - may finally be on track as part of the team's proposal for a new ballpark.
Metro-North officials say they're interested in building a station, but are waiting for the city and the team to finalize plans for the stadium, for which the Yanks hope to break ground later this year.
"First, we need to see a done, signed deal," said Metro-North spokesman Dan Brucker. "Then we have to identify funding for the project."
The Yankees have wanted a train station since 1921, when team owners Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston and Jacob Ruppert were laying plans for the House that Ruth Built.
How much a new station would cost isn't clear, Brucker said. But Rep. Jos Serrano (D-Bronx) says he's received $2.4 million in federal money that can be used for planning and starting the project.
The Hudson Line station could also bring shoppers to the planned Bronx Terminal Market, south of the stadium, and it might help if there were a repeat of December's transit strike.
A temporary stop at Yankee Stadium served 5,000 people during the strike.
The recent buzz in The Bronx is a sign that Metro-North managers are thinking beyond the needs of weekday commuters, said Bill Henderson of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA.
"One of the downsides of our transit infrastructure is that it's based on the idea that everybody comes in to go downtown," said Henderson.
"This is another choice for users of the railroad . . . The real growth areas for Metro-North are the non-traditional things."
