YANKS TOSS FAT $$ PITCH
By BILL SANDERSON
March 22, 2006 -- The Yankees are sweetening their pitch for a new stadium by
offering Bronx elected officials $1 million yearly to spend on community groups, park maintenance, Yankee promotional items and game tickets for youth groups and senior citizens
to see Derek Jeter and the Bombers.
The team would
offer the money each year of the new ballpark's 40-year lease to a Bronx Community Trust Fund
, which would be overseen by "an individual of prominence" appointed by Bronx elected officials, the proposal says. Also, the team proposes that
some stadium construction work and other team business be steered toward Bronx residents and Bronx-based minority- and women-owned companies
.
The team's proposals are detailed in a draft community benefits agreement that would become part of the city's approval of the stadium project. Copies of the proposal are circulating among Bronx political leaders. A City Council hearing on the project is scheduled for next Tuesday, and the council has an April 5 deadline to vote on the project.
The Yankees declined to comment on the proposal yesterday. "We are presently negotiating the agreement. It's not finalized," said team president Randy Levine.
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrin, who's been a strong advocate for the stadium project, called
the draft proposal "a good one," but said it needs "tweaking."
