One of the dumbest bits of stupidity I ever witnessed occured with a unit of Marine reservists flown to Vieques Puerto Rico from Michigan for an amphibious landing. Those guys went from a brutal winter with sub zero temps to 90-100 degree with super high humidity in a matter of hours. It was black flag conditions all the way. Those guys dropped like flies, and three of them went home in shipping containers all of them officers. At least half the unit ended up a casualty most from heat cramps but we had at least a dozen strokes. If that had been a real combat situtation they would have been wiped out. I also remember stuffing salt tablets down people's throats until they discovered that excessive salt intake has the same symptoms as heat cramps.
