In the 90s when I was traveling back and forth to Minnesota, I was taking AmTrak from Klamath Falls, Oregon to Winona, MN. for $179 round trip. I did that in 1993, 1995, and 1996. I traveled coach, but I went through AAA to make my reservations and with the 15 percent discount that AAA gets, it was a good deal. And at that time I could get a rental car for $159 a week with unlimited mileage. I do not know what AmTrak is now. The train I took from Portland, Oregon was the Empire Builder and supposed to be the most 'ontime' of all the trains. The last research I read on that said it is still the most 'ontime' of the train routes.
