A 68-year-old monument in Susquehanna County was ripped out of the ground Friday after a court ruling on a land dispute involving actor Bronson Pinchot.
The actor won a court battle against the historical society in October.
The historic gazebo in Harford was removed from property owned by actor Bronson Pinchot and will be placed in another location. |
Pinchot wanted a gazebo and old monument removed from his property. Borough workers removed them Friday, even though many neighbors wanted the historic structures to stay.
Moving a gazebo and stone monument is no easy task. People who live in the small town of Harford were shocked when they heard that both had to go.
"Very sad day. I was here in 1940 when they put that in. It was put there to honor the people that came here in 1790," said Ken Adams of Harford.
Pinchot may be best known for his role as Balki on the 1980s TV show "Perfect Strangers."
The monument honoring the founders of Harford was dug up Friday. |
Pinchot now owns many properties in Harford, including a little strip of land across the street from his home. According to officials at the historical society, that strip of land was the center of town for years where the town gathered for events.
"My grandmother told me she came here to this very spot and listened to Galusha Grow. He was speaker of the house during Lincoln term. He spoke from gazebo right here," Adams said.
That's why the historical society put another gazebo on this spot about 15 years ago, to give it some more of a historical look. The monument was put to honor the founders of Harford.

Just on the outskirts of town is the old Pennsylvania Soldiers Orphan School. It was built around the time of the Civil War. It is where officials with the historical society said the gazebo will end up.
The monument is expected to be placed at the Harford Cemetery.
Mr. Pinchot could not be reached for comment.

They want to be heard any other time so why not now? I hate it when actors move into my state.
