A 25-year-old Bryan man was charged with theft Sunday after he was mistakenly paid 100 times more than he should have been but did not return the money.
In February, Cesar Jaime Saldivar was paid $99,275 instead of $992.75 because of an accounting error at Texas Steel Conversion, according to a police report.
Attempts to get the money back were unsuccessful, police said.
According to the police report, Saldivar told company employees that he felt he did not do anything wrong, did not have the money and needed more time to figure out what to do.
Of the $99,275, about $38,000 was deducted for federal income taxes and about $6,000 for Social Security, and the net amount deposited into the account was $53,221.79, according to the report. Saldivar opened a bank account on March 13 and deposited $53,221, making two withdrawals -- $20,000 and $25,000 -- four days later, the report said.
